Philip Sidney Smith Collection of Photographs
Arctic Institute of North America Rare Book Collection
At the turn of the twentieth century, the United States Geological Survey employed numerous geologists to study the state of Alaska. Survey parties were sent into the bush for months at a time, engaging in topographic mapping and geologic exploration in Alaska. One such individual was Philip Sidney Smith. Due to his extensive research activities and scholarship, Smith has been hailed as the one of the most outstanding Alaskan specialists of the early twentieth century. Special Collections at the University of Calgary is pleased to present the Philip Sidney Smith Collection of Photographs, which preserves the spirit of adventure characteristic of Smith’s expeditions.
