In 2001 celebrated Canadian writer Timothy Findley, accompanied by writer William Whitehead, was the Distinguished Writer in the University of Calgary’s Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme. During that time Special Collections developed a friendship with William Whitehead through conversations and the donation in 2002 of Timothy Findley’s personal copy of the limited edition of If stones could speak and the subsequent donations of other published works by Timothy Findley which he had inscribed to Mr. Whitehead. The collection includes the play Elizabeth Rex for which Mr. Findley received the Governor General’s Award for Drama in 2000 and one copy is specially bound by the noted Canadian bookbinder Pierre Ouvrard. In 2005 and 2008 Mr. Whitehead made additional donations of Timothy Findley publications further documenting translations into languages such as German, Danish, Italian, Swedish, Finnish and Turkish among others, and variant printings of many of the works. Mr. Whitehead’s 2004 donation of the contents of the Timothy Findley atelier/studio originally housed in Cotignac, France includes a great variety of materials including additional books inscribed to both Findley and Whitehead.
