Canadian composer, teacher, trombonist and conductor Malcolm Forsyth was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, on December 8, 1936. Came to Canada in 1968. Died in Edmonton, Alberta, on July 5, 2011. Biographical information available in Encyclopedia of music in Canada. 2nd ed., p. 488-489.
Fonds consists of correspondence with various associations, companies and individuals in the music, publishing, broadcasting and education fields; music scores and sketches, research materials, and notes; audiorecordings of performances of Forsyth's work and interviews with him; teaching materials; arrangements of other composers' works; legal records; financial records; programs, promotional material and program notes; newsclippings, reviews and articles; and other material.
Donated by M. Forsyth between 1995 and 2011, and by the estate of Malcolm Denis Forsyth in 2011.
